The Piedmont or Piedmont Service is a passenger train operated twice a day by Amtrak and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) between Raleigh, the state capital and Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina. Operation began in May 1995. North Carolina owns the rolling stock used on the Piedmont. However, the Carolinian 's rolling stock is used through Amtrak.

History Edit

The North Carolina Department of Transportation created the Piedmont as an alternative to the successful Carolinian, which started service between New York City and Charlotte in 1990. Officials sought to add a second round trip train between Raleigh and Charlotte.
